Why is their no mention of the hadith of the Prophet (peace & blessing be upon him) concerning how the animal is to be treated prior to slaughter. (i.e. not slaughtered in the presence of other animals, not slaughtered in the presence of blood, not displaying the instruments of slaughter before the animal.

There is a lot more to Islam / Halal than just letting the blood flow in the name of Allah (swt).

We should be ashamed that non-muslims are telling us about animal welfare, when islam prescribed codes of how we are to threat animals.

I guess the UK "non-stunned" Halal Meat industry does not want to extend the debate outside its narrow definition of Halal, since it does not want to be answering questions on how animals are treated.

It wants to reassure us, its not stunning animals, (so that we don't buy 'halal' meat from europe.

I agree with Rianne. Is a chicken helal simply because its throat has been cut after declaring the oness of Allah? doesn't that animal have to live a halal and humane life? The chickens that we consume never see the light of day. How can we consider battery farming to be helal when we know morally its wrong. Morals are instilled at birth and they are from Allah. If it doesn't feel morally right, then it probably isn't. Meat is a luxury, it is NOT a right that we have. We have no right to eat meat. A kilo of chicken should not be cheaper than a kilo of mangoes its ridiculous. 3 chickens for £5! May God guide us. We need to ask ourselves, if our Prophet were here today, would he approve of us eating battery chickens?

what about 'and wholesome (tayyeb)' which always follws the word 'halal' in the Qur'an...? How is it Islamically possible for 'halal' chickens to be sold '3 for 5 pounds' (or 4 for 5 pounds as I've seen last year)? This is half the price where animal welfare people say that animals led a short and cruel life in cramped conditions (the 1.99 tesco chicken). As Muslims we need to remember our duty of care to Creation (we are guardians as per Qur'an 6:165, not owners allowed to exploit). God states in the Qur'an that all animals are "communities like you" and deserve to live a 'fitra' (life as God intended them to). My 2p.
